Our Question about Light

Question:

 

For our project, we were wondering, "What quantities and types of energy would it take to travel as fast as the speed of light?"

 

Answer:

 

After researching our topic, we came to a conclusion. The answer to our question is, "To travel as fast as the speed of light, it would take an infinite amount of energy." We would also need an infinite amount of kinetic energy to travel as fast as the speed of light. The only technology capable of this is a "warp drive", but we don't know how to make it yet. "Warp drive" is the only technology capable of traveling at the speed of light while not breaking the laws of physics. Below is an explanation of how warp drive works and Einstien's Theory of Special Relativity. 

Albert Einstein constructed another theory based on the Theory of Relativity. He called this theory the Theory of Special Relativity. Einstein believed that "The speed of light is the same for everyone who measures it, no matter how fast they are moving in relation to the light. In order to accommodate this behavior for light, Einstein’s theory predicted that time and space would have to stretch or contract as someone traveled with increasing speed. And out of special relativity popped a cosmic speed limit: nothing could ever exceed the speed of light."

 

Theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre’s “warp drive” is the only idea that we found in our research that attempted to match Einstein's speed limit. Alcubierre’s theory does not challenge the cosmic speed limit. He simply wanted to find a way to match it. Alcubierre’s warp drive goes along with the same concept that space can stretch or contract. Alcubierre showed that if matter could be distributed accurately, space can be contracted in front of a spacecraft and stretched out behind it. This action would create a bubble around the spacecraft that enables it to move as fast as you want. Due to the fact that space is contracting in front of the spacecraft, it wouldn’t actually be moving faster than the speed of light. The spacecraft that is enclosed inside of the warp bubble would be at rest inside of the moving warp bubble. The crew travelling in the spacecraft wouldn't feel any outside forces such as acceleration. Below is a picture of how warp drive would work.
